ON A CHEESE RUN
Article Abstract:
Cheese is expected to find more acceptance among Indian consumers as Amul, Britannia and Dabon International Ltd (DIL) are trying to aggressively promote the product. These companies have launched new variants like Mozzarella, capsicum, jeera, pepper, garlic, French spread and chiplet into the Rs100 crore cheese market to attract the customers. They are also offering cheese in various packages like slices and tins. DIL proposes to introduce special cheese varieties to meet the tastes of the people in different regions of India. DIL has introduced its Le Bon brand in northern India. It plans to sell this brand in all major cities in the country by the end of 1998-99. Amul, another cheese producer, plans to introduce slices as the singles segment accounts for 40 percent of the total cheese market. It also plans to raise its production capacity at a cost of Rs44 crore. Now, Amul holds a 40 percent share in the 5,000- tonne Indian cheese market while Britannia holds 35 percent. DIL hopes to corner 20 percent of the market in the next 2 years. (ag)
