OPEC lifts quota but urges increase in refining power

Sheik Ahmad Fahad Al Ahmad Al-Sabah, President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has committed to continuing crude oil production so that oil reserves may increase before an anticipated seasonal increase in demand later in the year. However, Mr. Al-Sabah also cautioned that a shortage in oil refinery capacity may undermine this strategy. In response to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries President's statements oil prices rose sharply to $56 a barrel at the highest point in New York, yesterday.
