OR practice in South Africa
Article Abstract:
Operations research (OR) activities is alive but on the decline in South Africa. Although the country's OR Society of South Africa was established in 1969 by Herbert Sichel, the field suffers from a 'lack of focus and critical mass,' with OR education or training being integrated into other courses. As a consequence, few carry out research into OR principles and techniques are decreasing. Nevertheless, opportunities for applying OR remain in the areas of manufacturing, environmental and wildlife management.

OR in Portugal: past achievements and current perspectives
Article Abstract:
Operations research (OR) and its practice continues to grow in Portugal. Although the field suffers from a bias 'towards techniques' and the lack of OR practitioners among entrepreneurs and private firms, its development is assured in light of OR's inclusion in the curricula of Portuguese universities and the activities of APDIO, the Portuguese OR society. The latter hopes to promote OR through an annual conference and publication of the journal 'Investigacao Operacional.'
