The UK press is awash in innuendo concerning the private lives of its royal family, especially Prince Charles and Princess Diana. This obsessive preoccupation with the monarchy is regrettable, since Britain's economic, infrastructure, and governmental problems are more pressing concerns.

Gypsies in central and eastern Europe, mostly illiterate and unemployed, face nationalist threats in several of the countries they inhabit. A meeting of gypsy leaders sponsored partly by Romania marks their first governmental recognition as a non-territorial minority.
