Breaking the mold: ruling party shaken by Takeshita faction battle
Article Abstract:
The removal of Shin Kanemaru from the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan has given way to two contenders for his post in the party's powerful Takeshita faction. Faction members are divided in their support for Ichiro Ozawa and Keizo Obuchi, who was elected on Oct 22, 1992 by senior officials to replace Kanemaru. However, Ozawa and his supporters question the validity of Obuchi's election. They have also set up a group ostensibly geared toward political reform, but which could eventually become another faction.

Time for a change: Ichiro Ozawa threatens to split ruling party
Article Abstract:
Ichiro Ozawa is a rising Japanese politician who seeks to end domination by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that has prevailed in Japan for 39 years. In Dec 1992 Ozawa and former Finance Minister Tsutomu Hata left the Takeshita faction of the LDP to organize Reform Forum 21, composed mostly of young members of parliament. Reform Forum 21 advocates political changes that would diminish corruption. Ozawa believes that disaster or stagnation will befall Japan if the LDP's political monopoly does not end.
