Old battle, new strategy
Article Abstract:
The International Monetary Fund and World Bank are changing their approaches to developing economies and seeking greater input from those economies themselves. The aim is to reduced infant mortality and extreme poverty, and to allow all social groups to take part in policy formation. The two organizations are also to cooperate more closely. Economic growth is needed to alleviate poverty. There is a need for aid recipients to be commited to their economic policies, but it is not clear how this can be achieved.

Critics of globalisation have attacked the economic policies known as 'Washington consensus', claiming that the poor are suffering at the hands of the rich. Some criticism of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund is deserved, but the institutions have admitted that reform is needed.
