Marcelle Cosmetics of Montreal, Quebec, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the business. The company started out as a distributor for a line of hypoallergenic cosmetics in 1949. It began the manufacture of cosmetics in the 1960s. In its 50-yr history, Marcelle has kept a low profile. It does not compete with large multinationals such as Estee Lauder and Elizabeth Arden in department stores. Its products are available in 2,000 pharmacies across Canada wehre cosmeticians explain their features to customers.

The king of bread, butts and beer

Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc of Laval, Quebec, has always placed emphasis on innovative distribution and marketing ideas to keep it on top of its competition. The firm, which started out by selling bread, is credited with giving Quebec longer store hours and rationalizing the convenience store sector. To counter the moves of supermarket chains, Couche-Tard has teamed up with major oil firms and increased its freshly baked goods line to offer more choices for its customers.
