Managers from European companies operating in China admit they would approach business operations in China differently if they had the benefit of hindsight. Approximately 63% of the respondents said their expectations were working, and 61% said they had overestimated the market potential. They cited the main conditions for success as being an efficient distribution network, loyal employes and location.

The reform of China's state owned enterprises (SOE's), pricing controls and the arrival of foreign competition has cause strong growth in the Chinese economy. But regional financial problems, a potential fallout in export growth and foreign investment and the ability of China to absorb millions of redundant workers from merging SOE's is of concern to investors.
