Portugal banking on success
Article Abstract:
The mergers and acquisition market in Portugal has continued to grow slowly between Jan 1996-Sept 1997, with the largest deals being found in the banking sector. Banco Portugues de Investimento (Portugal) purchased a 65% share of Banco de Fomento e Exterior for 888 million pounds sterling, in Aug 1996. Some 20 domestic and crossborder acquisitions, worth 2.1 billion pounds sterling had been completed by Jan-Sept 1997. Some 3.4 billion pounds sterling was spent on 33 transactions, in Portugal, during 1996.

Dead cats bouncing
Article Abstract:
The Asia Pacific economy seems to have entered a period of decline, but this does not mean that it has lost its competitiveness permanently. It is important to be aware that Asia Pacific countries cannot be seen as a single economic unit. There has traditionally been strong trading between these countries, but their economies are determined by distinct issues and policies. For this reason, it is probably an exaggeration to claim that the Asia Pacific region as a whole is facing economic crisis.
