On a knife-edge
Article Abstract:
Prices have dropped in China for three years, and the government has increased spending as a way to tackle deflation. The budget deficit has increased, and debt servicing has become an issue. There are problems in collecting government revenue, which means that the level of public spending cannot easily be sustained, and there is fear that it may not be enough to boost growth. State banks have tightened lending, which has hit companies, leading to layoffs and lower investment levels.
