Only connect: China doesn't understand Hong Kong, says Xu Jiatun
Article Abstract:
Xu Jiatun was once China's top representative in Hong Kong but fled to the US following the Tiananmen crackdown in 1991 when he sided with the pro-democracy students. As a punishment, he was expelled from the Communist Party. Aged 80, he lives as a recluse in Los Angeles, CA, but still retains an active interest in developments in Hong Kong. He believes that Chinese politicians do not understand Hong Kong's Western influences and that when it passes from British to Chinese ownership in 1997, Chinese leaders may create more problems than they solve.

Keep monitoring Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
There is a need for international attention on Hong Kong. The outlook is promising since China is sincere in wishing to preserve prosperity and stability in Hong Kong. There are promises for elections in 1998 and the Chinese leadership has repeated its commitment to two systems in one country. International attention focused on Hong Kong during the handover and continued attention should help minimise restrictions imposed on Hong Kong in the future.
