Article Abstract:
The concept of business process reengineering (BPR) had a significant impact on management thinking during the 1990s. Michael Hammer and James Champy's book on the subject was particularly influential. Managers are now moving on to other approaches so it is appropriate to investigate any enduring precepts in the BPR approach and their relationship to the traditional operations management approach. BPR's main contribution was its re-focusing of management attention on processes and this focus is likely to endure, but it lacked attention to causes and effects and it failed to address flow control.
