Opportunity knocks
Article Abstract:
The Spanish government, business and bankers are interested in a world economy that is centering around Asia. The government is demonstrating an interest by offering soft loans; increasing their diplomatic presence in Southeast Asia; and fostering good relations with China. At a time when Spanish Finance Minister Rodrigo Rato drafted a budget with significant reductions designed to reduce the budget deficit by 3.6% of the GDP, approximately $620 million in soft loans were allocated to Asia, especially China. In turn, Asia is forming an important part of Spain's export business.

Culture and castanets for the Asian visitor
Article Abstract:
The Spanish Government is supporting efforts by the country's tourism industry to attract an increasing number of visitors coming from Asian countries. Tourism accounted for 8% of Spain's Gross Domestic Product in 1991 and played a significant role in the country's economic boom during the late 1980s. The Barcelona Olympiad and the Seville Expo led to an increase in the number of visitors to the country in 1992. The government is aware that attracting Asian visitors to the country is the best way for tourism to continue its growth in 1993.
