Organising for risk management
Article Abstract:
Architects should minimise the risk of claims for professional negligence or breach of contract. The process of risk management should inform the whole firm and is best built on a well managed office procedure. Architects should work in recognised ways and keep records. A good relationship between client and architect is also fundamental to risk management as many difficulties can be solved quickly and informally if the relationship is good. This must be based on mutual trust and reinforced by a contract based on the Standard Form of Agreement. Quality must be maintained and the fee should be adequate for the job.

A factual guide to the SFA
Article Abstract:
The SFA guide from the Royal Institute of British Architects offers guidance to the Standard Form of Agreement for architects and clients. The guide needs to be read alongside the SFA as the text refers to clause numbers. The general tone is bland but there are useful elements. It includes a fully worked example of a fairly standard agreement and there is a checklist of actions required from architect and client by the SFA. There is good advice on negotiation of appointments and an historical survey of fees for jobs undertaken between 1985 and 1990.

Keeping the tenant sweet
Article Abstract:
The case of Meadows and Morley v Homor Properties illustrates the importance of minimising the disruption caused to building tenants by refurbishment works. The case was brought and won by two architects who claimed to have lost business due to the disruption caused by refurbishment to the building where they rented offices. Not only should architects involved in refurbishment work be aware of the rights of tenants but they should also be aware of the case as tenants themselves.
