Japan shoots for goal
Article Abstract:
The Japan Professional Soccer League (J League), which began operating on May 15, 1993, may serve as a model for how to market a sport. Under Chmn Saburo Kawabuchi, the J League has successfully promoted soccer among Japan's under-30 population as an alternative to the baseball that appeals mostly to men over 50. Kawabuchi, who persuaded 120 firms to back the founding of 10 teams in the J League, hopes to make Japan the first Asian country to host the World Cup soccer competition in 2002 and to produce a Japanese national team that can contend for the championship.

Article Abstract:
Japan is plagued with mountains of travel guides, none of which are perfect. The choice is generally between wretched but comprehensive and adequate but local. The surfeit is due to both enthusiastic overseas publishing houses and small, local English-language publishers. Alan Booth's 'Introduction to Japan' and 'Gateway to Japan' by June Kinoshita and Nicholas Palevsky are perhaps the best of the lot.
