Orphans of the virus
Article Abstract:
AIDS has worsened poverty in Zambia as in Africa as a whole, and both children and grandparents are affected when breadwinners and mothers die. Malnourishment affects half of Zambian children who may also not attend school, especially if they are AIDS orphans in rural areas. Uninfected babies may die due to lack of food after their mothers die, since relatives may wrongly believe that the baby is not likely to survive. There has also been a sharp rise in numbers of homeless children.
