Outspoken Marina Mahathir cuts her own path
Article Abstract:
Marina Mahathir has found her calling as the benefactor of the Malaysian AIDS Council. The daughter of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad routinely raises funds for the organization and makes the rounds of conferences as the spokesperson for AIDS control. She describes her work as tiring but fulfilling, and was able to add over $2.8 mil to the coffers of the AIDS council within three years through her sponsorship of charity events. Malaysia is estimated to have more than 18,000 AIDS cases, and AIDS programs are largely blocked by the Islamic religious leaders of the country.

Economic, political woes erode support for Mahathir: recession, and the gaining momentum of backing for Anwar, threaten longtime leader's grip
Article Abstract:
Political support of the Malaysian masses for longtime leader Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has been eroded significantly with Mahathir's decision to fire Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Mahathir's decision to fire Anwar seems to be the proverbial 'last straw' which broke popular backing for his leadership, which has been progressively challenged since Malaysia's economic downturn. Symphaty towards Ibrahim is credited to his effective economic policies which in conjunction with Mahathir's vision, helped Malaysia post an 8% annual growth in a decade of economic prosperity.

Mahathir hopes to avoid asking the IMF for assistance
Article Abstract:
Malaysia may not need the help of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bail the country out of the current currency turmoil that has been plaguing most countries in the region. Malaysian president Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is not ruling out the possibility of asking the IMF for assistance but hopes to avoid doing just that. Economists believe Malaysia can weather the financial crisis because the country does not have a huge debt problem and exports have started to pick up.
