Parliament election is prelude to politicking for presidency
Article Abstract:
The Parliamentary elections in Indonesia on Jun 7, 1999 would be crucial in determining the country's next president after authoritarian leader Suharto was dethroned from office. The election, which signals Indonesia's transition into a democratic government, is a tight race among the country's influential political parties including the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle. Under the Indonesian electoral law, the Parliament would comprise 500 members of the People's Consultative Assembly, which would determine the presidential and vice-presidential seats.

Habibie takes presidential oath, to face intense scrutiny
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's new president, former Vice President BJ Habibie, took his oath as president on May 21, 1998 after President Suharto stepped down and directly turned over the presidency directly to Habibie. However, it remains to be seen if Habibie, a longtime ally of Suharto, can establish credibility as a self-reliant leader. Habibie's critics accuse him of being a potentially rash leader and an ill-reputed economist.
