Overworked and overpaid: the American manager
Article Abstract:
Many top managers in the US receive very large salaries. However, this does not mean that they are happy. Indeed, many are coming under growing pressure as they are forced to work longer hours and to relinquish power to semi-autonomous teams. Job security is diminishing, while career progression can no longer be taken for granted. Managers no longer regard themselves as belonging to their company, and increasingly look on their role as that of a mercenary. Managers regard corporate pride and trust in their chief executive's decisions are being more important than their salary.

Economists as gurus

Many business executives see economists as of little use to them, as their often abstract theorizing has little to do with the actual management of a business. Yet these attitudes overlook ways in which economists can be very helpful in management, some of which are described.
