POWER TRANSMISSION GETS INFRASTRUCTURE STATUS
Article Abstract:
The government is according infrastructure status to the power transmission sector. The work on four major power projects is expected to start from December 1998. These projects would totally produce 4,300 mega watts of power. The projects to begin are Simhadri 1000 mw project in Andhra Pradesh, the 2000 mw Talcher-II project in Orissa, and the 650 mw Kawas power plant in Rajasthan. In a meeting of ministers and secretaries, the coal supply, transportation, funding issues and financial closures were discussed. The meeting decided that since power generation is an infrastructure activity, its transmission should also be given the same status. This would enable the transmission sector to be eligible for duty free packages. (um)
