AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS: THE PROBLEMS
Article Abstract:
The Commerce Ministry of the Government of India has approved a Rs760 crore package to promote the exports of large corporate houses having a turnover of over Rs2,000 crore. Corporates with over Rs2,000 crore turnover are basically net importers, having exports of only about 9.3 percent of their total sales. Small private sector companies/farmers have entered into expensive tie-ups to equip themselves to produce quality products to match international standards. But the Government has let them down by not providing adequate infrastructure. Exports need support of the Government and although large companies contribute substantial revenue to India, the Government should also identify potential areas and invest in them. These views have been expressed by Mr Rashid K Kidwai in an article. (gs)
