PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT
Article Abstract:
The land under tobacco cultivation decreased to 164,400 hectares in 1996-97 from 222,000 hectares in 1970-71. Excess production has caused a slump in the price of tobacco from Rs80 per kg to Rs41 a kg. Consequently, tobacco farmers of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh have been hit now. The earnings of tobacco farmers in India are the lowest in the world. India exports tobacco worth $200 million and the average yield per hectare is around 900- 1,150 kg compared to the global average of 1,685 kg. Indian growers are unable to grow new varieties of high yielding tobacco. They are not using mechanised harvesters and bulk curing barns. There has been very little research and development in the tobacco industry as it is considered a non-priority sector by the Government of India. New tobacco farming techniques to improve the yield have not been adopted. The area under cultivation of tobacco in Andhra Pradesh has decreased from 2,221,000 hectares in 1970-71 to 1,644,000 hectares in 1996-97. India's share in the world tobacco trade is 5 percent. (rk)
