Painter whose job is to recreate Mao
Article Abstract:
Ge Xiaoguang is a 39-year-old Chinese artist who paints the large picture of Mao Zedong, the late Chinese communist leader, that is displayed on Tiananmen Gate in Beijing. Ge's excellent work at the Beijing Fine Arts Design Co prompted his supervisors to recommend him for the important and highly visible job of painting and restoring Mao's portraits, which have to be replaced regularly due to weather and pollution. Executing the huge portrait takes Ge three weeks. He is proud to be responsible for creating what may be the most widely seen painting on Earth.

Frustration in Peking
Article Abstract:
China's cultural bureaucracy lauds the overseas success of its filmmakers while tightly restricting their work and distribution at home. Director Chen Kaige's Palme d'Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival for his film 'Farewell to My Concubine' was warmly greeted in the official press, but official displeasure at its content closed the film after one showing in Peking. Chinese theater attendance has plummeted since 1982 from 21 billion to 4.5 billion, reflecting the low quality of approved films among other factors.
