Palace moves
Article Abstract:
Rumors that China's 89-year-old leader, Deng Xiao-ping, is nearing death are intensifying the jockeying among politicians who would like to succeed him. Chief among these are senior Vice-Premier Zhu Rongji and Communist party Gen Sec Jiang Zemin. Zhu is known as a capable but unlovable leader and mastermind of China's economic reforms, while Jiang is perceived as a more personable leader who is busily forming powerful connections with the country's military and party officials. Another party leader, Qiao Shi, may also have the means to bid for power after Deng's death.

Mandate for reform: top leaders agree on politburo line-up
Article Abstract:
The composition of the new standing committee of the communist party's politburo in China has been finalized and approved by Chinese political leaders. With a term of office normally set for five years, the composition of the new standing committee is significant since it will be tasked with effecting the transition of power once Deng Xiaoping steps down. The present efforts to reform the economy are also seen as important especially since some reform-oriented and relatively young officials have been included in the new standing committee.
