China Telecom investors get brief shock
Article Abstract:
China Telecom (Hong Kong) Ltd.'s stockholders were briefly alarmed over a China daily report that fees on incoming cellular-phone calls will be eliminated. China Telecom, which is set to conduct a $4-billion initial public offering at the stock exchange of Hong Kong, was significantly affected by the report, since such as development will greatly reduce the earnings of the cellular-phone-network operator. The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, however, quickly denied the veracity of the China Daily report, citing that there are no plans to modify the tariff procedure for China's cellular phone firms.

However, local telecommunications officials noted that such plans may prove difficult to implement since the government has already given licenses to most of the companies that will be affected.
