Parliament versus commission
Article Abstract:
The European Parliament has criticised the European Commission and called for an investigation into fraud allegations. A compromise was achieved and the parliament did not pass a resolution calling for the resignation of two ministers. There are problems with European Union financial controls, but progress has also been made in this area. Greater vigilance has come with the entry of Nordic countries. Meanwhile, the European Parliament is starting to use its power and has shown the commission that it cannot be ignored.

Article Abstract:
The European Parliament has criticised the European Commission and has gained some good publicity, but has not become a popular body. The president of the European Commission, Jacques Santer, has made some effort in tightening the budget of the commission. The parliament has gained some power, and this action is a step toward democracy in Europe. The parliament should demonstrate that it can use its power wisely, and it has begun to do so.
