Passive cooling put to the test
Article Abstract:
Ove Arup undertook a study into the effectiveness of passive cooling techniques employed at an Inland Revenue building in Nottingham, England, in Aug 1995, at a time when the weather was unusually hot. The building has no formal air conditioning or cooling systems, and relies on fans providing air inlet through acoustic baffles and on window shading and night cooling. It was found that the internal air temperature remained stable over a period of several days, and was considerably below temperatures outside. Passive cooling was more effective on the lower floors than on the top floors.

Toward the transparent envelope: the dream of the perfect transparent envelope, which is also environmentally responsive, is coming closer to realisation
Article Abstract:
Many architects have dreamed of the perfect tansparent enclosure either set in a beautiful landscape or in an urban setting. Glass uses abundant natural ingredients and is spread so thinly that it can repay its energy debt several times over. Light transmitting insulants are available in mostly rigid forms although PET, polyester or low density glass fibre are flexible. Double glazing cavities can be filled with water using dyes that can absorb infra red and admit visible wavelenghts.

Ice work if you can get it
Article Abstract:
A report on the existing stations at the British Antarctic Survey's (BAS) Halley base and their structural details, with reference to the tough climatic conditions under which they operate is presented. Information about setting up new structures by mounting the building on slides like the garage built for BAS or the snowdrift control method being used by the U.S. National Science foundation is given.
