The twelve storeys of a mythical lion-headed fish
Article Abstract:
Australian-based Glenn Industries chose to use glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) to build a 37-meter statue of Singapore's national icon, Merlion, for the Sentosa Island theme park. The material is suitable for a monolithic construction which has a slender fish's body topped by a large lion's head, and it offers durability with workability. Glenn Industries used computer tomography and digitizing technology to scale up the co-ordinates from an artist's model. The company sprayed the GRC matrix onto a steel frame and applied a polymer coat, incorporating fibre-optic tubes for night-lighting.

Breaking out of the mould: the architectural profession has changed dramatically in a relatively short time, but from a client's point of view the changes are not enough
Article Abstract:
Competition amongst architects is high, coming from others in the profession and new suppliers offering substitute services. Often fees are at maximum levels from which they can be negotiated down and architects are seen less and less as a source of added value. The purchase of architectural services is increasingly being rationalised and many architects have recognised the need for changes to survive.

Material that broke the architectural mould
Article Abstract:
Glass-reinforced concrete (GRC), mixed with water and chemical admixtures, provides a construction product of considerable strength and versatility that offers surprising lightness. GRC could be formed with a wide variety of textures and colors to replicate natural materials, reconstructed stone or concrete finishes.
