Many European pharmaceutial companies are expanding their markets by entering the diagnostic and medical test kit segment of the industry, with the goal of personlized medicine for patients at the pharmacy. Better and faster treatment, as well as market expansion, is another aim of these companies, as well. Future growth for this sector is estimated to be between 4% and 15%.

New technology allows music to be recorded for free off the Internet by consumers. Digital storage media does not require consumers to purchase any music. Industry analysts believe online piracy will destroy the industry by 2010. Industry executives believe consumers are not computer literate enough in 1998 to cause major problems until the new millenium.

There were several mergers and several failed mergers in the pharmaceutical industry during 1998. SmithKline Beecham did not merge with American Home Products or with Glaxo Wellcome. American Home Products also did not merge with Monsanto. It is possible that Hoechst and Rhone-Poulenc will merge.
