Patriotism is a selling point during crisis: when the going gets tough in Southeast Asia, marketers get inspired
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers in Asia are using the current economic crisis as the main theme in their advertising campaigns. Thai companies, in particular, are invoking love of country among consumers to sell their products. A cheap brand of soap has successfully cornered half of the low-priced soap market since it ran an ad that makes fun of the International Monetary Fund. WPP Group's Ogilvy & Mather, likewise, gave the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand marketing success when it created a funny fish commercial that made reference to an old Thai joke.
