Overseas travel increases: but rise in Asian trips fails to cheer industry
Article Abstract:
The increase in the number of Japanese travelers to Asia has failed to cheer travel agencies in Japan. Statistics show that overseas travel has risen by 4% to 1.2 million people in Jan 1999 compared to Dec 1998. The rise is comparable to almost the same gains in the first half of 1988 which declined sharply by yearend. However, the increase in overseas travel has not translated to profits for the travel industry that had to resort to budget package tours to lure travelers to prime destinations in China, Taiwan and Korea.

Detecting metal partners
Article Abstract:
Japan's tableware and kitchenware makers, represented by the Japan Metal House Ware Industry Association (JMHWIA), is mulling a move to ally themselves with low-cost metalwares makers in other Asian countries. The JMHWIA is planning to send a mission to other Asian manufacturers late in November 1997, to fine potential allies to help the domestic industry expand to new markets. The move is also aimed at allowing Japanese manufacturers regain markets lost to low-cost competitors from countries like China and South Korea.

Japanese car makers cheer as dollar rise boosts profit
Article Abstract:
Japanese automobile manufacturers always welcome the rise of the dollar against the yen. A rising dollar means that automakers will earn more yen for each dollar earned overseas. Japanese consumers' appreciation for the rising dollar also encourages them to buy cars. Analysts predict that automakers will post record earnings for the year ending Mar. 1997 although these have yet to be factored into share prices.
