Paul Omukuba was a Kenyan waiter who died from AIDS, and his death has set a precedent in Kenya, since his death notice mentioned this. One problem with tackling the AIDS infection in Africa has been the stigma attached to the disease. The openness over why Paul Omukuba died may help change this and save lives.

The image of AIDS in the arts has grown more sophisticated as the disease has spread, with films such as Francois Margolin's 'Mensonges' and Cyril Collard's 'Les Nuits Fauves' depicting people with AIDS in unsympathetic roles. Recent books on AIDS themes are also examined.

Article Abstract:
The subject of AIDS in art has only a slightly shorter history than the disease itself. Integrating the subject effectively into plays, books, and poetry has proven difficult. AIDS could best be rendered artistically as depicting all of human suffering.
