Senior general managers in the UK are generally unaware of the impact of acquisitions and mergers on corporate information technology structure, according to research undertaken for applications development software concern Antares Alliance Group by Metrica. In many cases, vast amounts of money are being wasted because acquisitions lead to significant changes being made to information systems, especially systems hardware and applications software. The research indicates that mergers and acquisitions have less impact on systems hardware than on applications software.

Traditional manufacturing industry is strong in the region, and firms in this sector have recovered rapidly from the 1990s recession due to a growth in exports. Productivity can be raised through investment in ways that mean there is no need to hire additional employees. The management should have the ability to deal with expansion, and weaknesses should be identified and rectified.
