Promoting the role architecture within every day life and raising standards is one of the first tasks of Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) communications director Roula Konzotis, who took over the role in August 1999. Konzotis is passionate about the need to ensure architecture is considered at a national level and the RIBA is in an ideal position to be a the forefront of future developments.

The architectural firm Softroom was awarded the Stephen Lawrence Prize for its Kielder Belvedere project. This built project is only one aspect of the variety of work this company takes on, including working in virtual and real environments.

Future Systems have been commissioned to design and build Selfridge's store in Birmingham, England. The commissioning of Norman Foster to design the extension for Selfridge's Oxford Street, London store is also discussed.
