Videotron Communications has rolled out a new service that allows customers of its digital cable service to send and receive e-mail without a computer. The company's digital cable subscribers have to buy a wireless keyboard worth C$99 to be able to use the e-mail service. They also have to pay a basic monthly fee for a minimum number of stations and additional fees for individual stations or packages of stations. Videotron is also planning an Internet service and an e-commerce service.

Shaw vies for #1 cable

Moffat Communications has agreed to sell its major cable systems in Alberta and Manitoba to Shaw Communications for about $1.2 billion. The sale also includes Moffat's 320,000 subscribers in the area. With the purchase, Shaw will have control of 27.4% of Canada's cable television subscribers. The company, however, still comes second to Roger Communications, which has 28.5% of the country's cable subscribers.

Cable TV network, HGTV Canada, has launched an image and tactical advertising campaign to promote 'Garden Time,' a debuting program dedicated to revealing the secrets of gradening. The multi-media campaign was conceptualized in-house, with the help of Ammirati Puris Lintas, an advertising firm based in Toronto, Ontario. Meanhwile, the company has also launched its website, www.hgtv.ca.
