Pfizer gives Phytopharm a boost; pact centers on obesity treatment

Phytopharm PLC, based in Britain, UK, signed a licensing deal with Pfizer Inc. that is potentially worth up to $32 million in research funding, license fees and other payments. Under the licensing agreement, Phytopharm gave Pfizer exclusive global rights to an experimental drug against obesity. The compound has been derived from extracts of a plant native to South Africa. The drug has exhibited potential an an appetite suppressant in animal tests, according to Phytopharm Chief Executive Richard Dixey.

Wellcome Trust chief Michael Dexter is heading a controversial effort to place the results of gene-hunting research in the public domain. In early 1999, Dexter unveiled the SNP Consortium, a joint venture involving Wellcome and major pharmaceutical firms. Those firms have agreed to make genetic data generated under the consortium's auspices public, and that has infuriated some biotechnology companies that have leading rolls in developing proprietary genetic technologies.
