Phelps expects firm metals prices to help repay acquisition debt

Phelps Dodge Corp. of the United States is to acquire Inco Ltd. of Canada and Falconbridge Ltd. also of Canada for $35.4 billion. The American metals industrial plans to pay down $22 billion in debt from the acquisition aided by firm metals prices. Phelps Dodge Corp. share price fell 8.1 percent as investors questioned the security of the company taking on such a great amount of debt.
