Air fares held in check
Article Abstract:
Rival airlines have not raised fares to take advantage of demand generated by problems at Cathay Pacific Airways. The rivals say that the long-term damage done by such a tactic would far outweigh any temporary boost in revenues. Cathay has also delayed the start of nonstop service between Hong Kong and New York, partly due to the pilots' action and partly due to the weakening economy.

Article Abstract:
Philippine Airlines Inc.'s labor union continued to strike despite the company's back-to-work order. The carrier, which threatened to fire striking employees if they fail to return to their jobs by Nov. 1, 1996, was forced to assign ground operations to managers supervisors and other non-striking personnel. The strike is the third since 1994 and has led to the cancellation of 59 domestic and international flights.
