Article Abstract:
Malaria and other tropical diseases are problems in Nigeria. Health problems can slow down economic development, while poverty leads to vulnerability to disease. There is a lack of safe drinking water, and of access to remedies to treat dairrhoea. There has been some progress to tackle guinea worm infection, but vaccination programs suffered in the 1990s when funds were focused on prestigious hospitals, and basic clinics were neglected. Primary care is a key objective of Nigeria's new government. AIDS is starting to become a problem, and is difficult to control because of lack of birth control, lack of access to antibiotics, and poverty, prostitution and promiscuity.

Oil alone doesn't make you happy
Article Abstract:
Revenues from the petroleum industry have not benefited local communities in Nigeria, and political repression has meant that complaints have been directed to petroleum companies themselves. Shell has recruited development agency experts to help administer funds for community development, but better local government is also needed in Nigeria. The new government has made prompt payments for investment to petroleum companies, but faces arrears. The companies may be permitted to keep more profits in exchange for paying more of investment costs.

Nigeria's new broom
Article Abstract:
The new Nigerian government is seeking to carry out reforms and has established an inquiry into human rights abuses as well as removing some top ranking people from the armed forces. President Olusegun Obasanjo has also sought to tackle corruption in the civil service with an anti-corruption bill as well as sacking some senior customs officials. A key problem that the president has to face is conflict in the oil-rich Niger Delta, and he aims to revive this region's economy.
