Piecewise affine approximations for the control of a one-reservoir hydroelectric system
Article Abstract:
The calculation of optimal and approximately optimal policies for a discrete-time model of a hydroelectric power system reservoir is examined. Profit from electric power production was modeled by a piecewise linear function. The special characteristics of optimal policies and piecewise affine approximations of the optimal return functions at each segment of dynamic programming were utilized to reduce the computational complexity compared to ordinary value iteration.

Assignment of tools to machines in a flexible manufacturing system
Article Abstract:
A subgradient optimization model is used to address the problem of assigning tools to a flexible manufacturing system with a limited number of slots. Two sets of constraints are dualized and two integer subproblems are formed, with the first subproblem being broken down further into several smaller tasks. It is shown that the subgradient algorithm is a better method for solving the problem, but it is easily influenced by convergence parameters.
