Growing Basle
Article Abstract:
There are plans to revise the Basle Accord for the banking industry. There is a need for revision since the system is said to encourage risk by not taking into account whether loans are low risk or high risk. The aim is for risk levels of loan portfolios to be refelcted in banks' capital. Risks can be assessed in a number of ways, such as sovereign risk related to countries where loans go to. Sophisticated banks are better able to employ internal ratings, though comparisons between different methodologies may be difficult.

Article Abstract:
Many banking fiascos can be tied to unwise macroeconomic policies that encourage boom-bust cycles. Nations should adopt stable, slow growth policies that allow for bank failures without threatening the entire system. The trend towards real-time gross settlements may prevents some failures.
