Pillow talk: improper influence by presidential mistress alleged
Article Abstract:
Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos denies a newspaper report that his supposed mistress, a married woman named Rose Marie Jimenez-Arenas, often tries to sway his decision-making in official matters. Some journalists criticize the report by Marites Danguilan-Vitug and Glenda Gloria, published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Oct 11-12, 1993, for relying largely on unnamed sources. Although Ramos insists that Jimenez has no influence, he also tacitly admits that she is indeed his mistress. The report has tarnished Ramos' reputation but may ultimately help him by airing the matter out.

Clean-up crusade: former senator leads campaign for electoral reform
Article Abstract:
Former Philippines Senator Aquilino Pimintel has headed a quixotic-seeming but potentially effective crusade against electoral cheating, saying his own seat was stolen from him. Citing shady results in the 1995 general elections, and with backing from former President Corazon Aquino's Foundation for Clean Elections and from Cardinal Jaime Sin, he is about to submit his evidence to the Senate Electoral Tribunal. Losers in elections could always challenge the results, but had to pay millions of pesos for recounts of the ballots.

On the wrong foot
Article Abstract:
Philippines President Joseph Estrada presented himself as a reformer and a friend of the poor while campaigning, but has in fact made little real progress since coming to power on Jun 30, 1998. There is growing concern that he lacks full control over his administration and that factionalism is emerging in the upper levels of government. He is losing credibility among business leaders, and is also being damaged by the perception that his administration is too close to Marcos allies.
