Piranha: mainstay of medium force mobility
Article Abstract:
Mowag Motorwagenfabrik's Piranha has evolved from a 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle in the 1970s into a modular family of infantry vehicles with a range of weight, volume, armor, armament, powerplant and price options. It is the best-selling Western wheeled infantry vehicle, with 5,400 units sold. The Piranha owes it success to a design concept that uses an independent suspension and central driveline system combined with a powerpack at the front of the hull alongside the driver and commander. This configuration gave the best compromise between total weight and disposable payload.

Piranha IV bites at UK and South African markets
Article Abstract:
The emergence of a fourth Piranha infantry vehicle category became imminent when Vickers Defence Systems obtained a license to build the Piranha IV for the UK and South African markets. GIAT Industries also secured the rights to build the vehicle in France for the French Army's infantry vehicle requirement. The 8x8 Piranha IV has a 10-ton payload and a usable internal volume of 12 cubic meters. However, it will not be able to go below 140kPa since its 395/85 R20 tires would be outfitted with Hutchinson countermine runflat inserts.
