Banca Intesa S.p.A. of Italy is to merge with Sanpaolo IMI S.p.A. also of Italy. The merged banking synergy is valued at more than 68 billion Euros with savings and new revenue of 1.6 billion Euros ($2.1 billion) over the first three years. As barriers to cross-border acquisitions fall, the European financial sector is facing a wave of consolidation.
