Plane dealing: Jakarta drives tough bargain in F-16 deal
Article Abstract:
Sensing the US's eagerness to re-sell 28 F-16 fighter jets whose delivery to Pakistan is barred by law, Indonesia is driving a hard bargain. Some reports claim nine are all but sold for $162 million, and the whole lot could go for $400 million-$500 million. The US could then refund Pakistan's $658 million, allowing Islamabad to buy Mirage 2000-5 fighter-bombers instead. In addition to a lower price Jakarta wants govt-guaranteed soft loans. Indonesia has 11 F-16s but has made similar purchases from Israel and British Aerospace.

Strategic retreat: lost seats in parliament no threat to army
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian military's quiet acceptance of a reduction in number of its seats in Parliament from 100 to 75 indicates the latter's status more than the former's, say analysts. The military has reacted sharply to other challenges to its role in national politics, and top officers seemed angry over the May 1, 1995, statement by a senior official that a civilian should be the next vice-president. The reduction returns the military to the number of seats it had before the 1987 expansion of the legislature.

Turn and burn: Jakarta looks to Russia, not America, for new fighters
Article Abstract:
Indonesia is to buy 12 Sukhoi Su-30MK multirole fighters from Russia, after cancelling the purchase of nine US Lockheed Martin F-16 interceptors. The sale of the F-16s had first been proposed by the US in mid 1995 and Indonesian officials claim that they were already considering the Su-30s. Indonesia is also planning to buy eight Mi-17 helicopters, and both purchases will give the armed forces an important performance boost.
