Pointing to better times: stabilizing demand in Asia may boost exports
Article Abstract:
Encouraging signs show that the Asian region may be on its way to economic recovery which is particularly evident in the crushing drops in consumption rates. Hong Kong's exports are starting to stabilize while South Korea's imports and exports are growing. Beer and liquor consumption in Thailand has also increased. Despite these positive signs, however, the stabilization of domestic demand is quite hard to attain in Asia where export is tied with domestic consumption. Thus, export producers will have to wait for domestic demand to improve before they themselves can recover.

Reasons for the Asian economic crisis start to emerge; answers unclear, but 3 factors get notice: commercial bankers, foreign capital, overinvestment
Article Abstract:
Several studies have been conducted to explain the Asian economic crisis but economists have not reached a definitive conclusion on the exact explanation. Despite this disagreement, three trends have come into focus. One is that commercial bankers are the most dangerous players in the financial jungle because they follow the movement of the herd. Another is the realization that foreign capital inflow should be monitored or regulated. Third is the fact that overinvestment is comparable to overconsumption in terms of its negative effects on the economy.
