Poland examines radical options for multirole fighter modernization
Article Abstract:
Poland has announced it is exploring other options for its multirole fighter program, which calls for the procurement of up to 112 aircraft. The most radical alternative that Poland is putting into consideration is the purchase of a maximum of 36 inexpensive lightweight fighters and up to 54 advanced trainers as well as the acquisition of 18-22 second-hand high performance fighter aircraft for a single squadron. The new aircraft will be combined with 20 slightly modernized MiG29s and 50 Su-22s until around 2010. Poland, which is facing MoD budget problems, is expected to make the formal RFPs by mid 1998.

... as French Navy gets the go-ahead for two-seater Rafales
Article Abstract:
The French Navy has been authorized by the country's government to change its order so that 40 of the 60 naval versions of the Rafale multirole fighter would be a two-seater aircraft. The original contract with manufacturer Dassault Aviation specified single-seat aircraft. French military experts believe that the Rafale needs a two-man crew for it to effectively operate in a hostile environment, such as in Kosovo. The French armaments board will award a pre-development contract to Dassault for the development of a two-seat variant called the Rafale BM.

France schemes ASMP successor
Article Abstract:
France has engaged the services of Aerospatiale Matra Missiles for the development and early production of an upgraded version of the country's medium-range Air Sol Moyenne Portee (ASMP) nuclear missile. It will replace the current ASMP used with the Mirage 2000N and Super Etendard fighter aircraft. The upgraded version, to be called ASMP-A, would be equipped with a ram-jet propulsion system that would enable it to achieve supersonic speed.
