Heir looms: Anwar seen as victor in Umno leadership race
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's finance minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is likely to defeat Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghafar Baba in the contest for the deputy presidency of the governing party, the United Malays National Organisation. By Sep 9, 1993 Anwar had won far more than the number of nominations needed to take the post away from Ghafar, the incumbent. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad, though ostensibly neutral, is close to backing Anwar publicly. Anwar is emerging as Mahathir's probable successor as prime minister.

Power machinations
Article Abstract:
Rival factions in the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) are revealing scandals within their own party. Politicians from the opposition Democratic Action Party are getting information from unnamed sources about scandals involving some of UMNO's leading personalities. Developments in the corporate structures of several state-owned enterprises also hint of a rivalry among UMNO politicians. The political maneuvering triggers fears among UMNO leaders of a possible split in the party.
