Chinese politics loom as major factor in merger talks between British firms
Article Abstract:
Chinese politics is having an impact on the planned merger between British Telecommunications PLC and Cable and Wireless PLC. Cable and Wireless owns 57% of Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd. The planned merger raises the question of whether the Chinese government, which has become increasingly anti-British in the run-up to 1997, will approve of the takeover of Hong Kong's leading telecommunications company by the UK's dominant telephone firm. Events in recent years have demonstrated the growing influence of Chinese politics over the Hong Kong business sector.
