Amid Mahathir's efforts, Anwar may opt to step down from government and challenge Mahathir's UMNO presidency in 1999, or remain as deputy minister.

Malaysian Prime Min Mahathir Mohamad is believed to be losing support in the Malay heartland. The fallout from the controversial arrest and prosecution of former Deputy Prime Min Anwar Ibrahim is largely responsible for the growing disenchantment with Mahathir's policies among Malays. Mahathir, however, believes that his party, the United Malays National Organization, will retain its majority in the upcoming elections in 2000. He is also actively courting Chinese voters by reminding them that he is the man most likely to guarantee political stability in Malaysia.
